چکیده
Methane is abundant in marine subsurface sediments, sourced from microbial or thermocatalytic production. The relative composition of its isotopologues (12CH4, 13CH4, 12CH3D and 13CH3D) used to infer sources sinks. anaerobic oxidation methane (AOM) an important sink reaction carried out by consortia methanotrophic archaea (ANME) partner bacteria the presence sulfate. We investigated isotopologue fractionations during AOM experiments with cultures ANME-1 obtained hydrothermally heated gas-rich sediments Guaymas Basin. During partial consumption four sets experiments, residual became enriched 13CH4 12CH3D, following kinetic 11.1 18.3‰ 117 180‰, respectively. Results one set D-depleted medium water (?D = –200‰, whereas control was –55‰) suggest potential reversibility activation step, which would contribute equilibrium as opposed fractionations. value ?13CH3D (the abundance 13CH3D respect that expected stochastic distribution) increased toward beyond (up 8.4‰) for (5.3‰ at 37 °C). clumped fractionation (difference between 13CH3D/12CH3D 13CH4/12CH4 fractionations) 4.8 12.8‰ contrast our previous observation little no effect aerobic oxidation. Our results demonstrate can near-equilibrium values observed systematics be distinguish versus processes nature.

Anaerobic oxidation of methane: an “active” microbial process
The anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is an important sink of methane that plays a significant role in global warming. AOM was first found to be coupled with sulfate reduction and mediated by anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). ANME, often forming consortia with SRB, are phylogenetically related to methanogenic archaea. ANME-1 is even able to produce ...

Isotope fractionation is a promising tool for quantifying methane oxidation in landfill cover soils. For good quantification an accurate determination of the isotope fractionation factor (alpha) of methane oxidation based on independent batch experiments with soil samples from the landfill cover is required. Most studies so far used data analysis methods based on approximations of the Rayleigh ...
متن کاملEvidence for nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation as a previously overlooked microbial methane sink in wetlands.
The process of nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-damo) was recently discovered and shown to be mediated by "Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera" (M. oxyfera). Here, evidence for n-damo in three different freshwater wetlands located in southeastern China was obtained using stable isotope measurements, quantitative PCR assays, and 16S rRNA and particulate methane monooxygenase gene...
متن کاملNew perspectives on anaerobic methane oxidation.
Anaerobic methane oxidation is a globally important but poorly understood process. Four lines of evidence have recently improved our understanding of this process. First, studies of recent marine sediments indicate that a consortium of methanogens and sulphate-reducing bacteria are responsible for anaerobic methane oxidation; a mechanism of 'reverse methanogenesis' was proposed, based on the pr...

Early social exposure is important for developing appropriate, species-specific adult behaviors. Carson Murray et al. (pp. 18189–18194) followed wild chimpanzees, habituated to human observers, in Gombe National Park, Tanzania, and analyzed maternal subgrouping patterns to investigate why adult males tend to be more gregarious than adult females. Mothers accompanied by their sons were more greg...
